LUMBINI MEDICAL COLLEGE
The establishment of Lumbini Medical College & Teaching Hospital in Tansen, rooted in the principles of education, health, and tourism, reflects a deep commitment to the development of the beautiful town. Recognizing the necessity for a medical school in the western hilly region, Lumbini Medical College & Teaching Hospital Pvt. Ltd. was conceptualized, leading to the establishment of a 100-bedded hospital in 2063 B.S., with approval from the Ministry of Health and Population.
While health remains a significant government responsibility, addressing every issue at the governmental level is impractical given the myriad challenges faced by the country. Therefore, this comprehensive project was implemented incrementally, involving local Nepalese entrepreneurs in its phased development.
Over time, the hospital has evolved into a 600-bedded facility, incorporating expanded services and facilities such as CT scans, Fluoroscopy, Laparoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, Uretero-retinoscopy (URS) and ICPL, well-equipped operating theaters, and sub-specialty services, among others.
Before the affiliation with Kathmandu University, the hospital hosted the VI the National Surgical Meeting of the Society of Surgeons of Nepal on December 22nd–23rd, 2007. The institution has also received approval to conduct the Nursing Program, broadening its scope for professional workforce development.
The relentless efforts led to a significant milestone when Lumbini Medical College obtained affiliation with the esteemed Kathmandu University of Nepal on November 16th, 2008. The institution is also in the process of being registered in the World Directory of Medical Schools by WHO.
In this era of advanced Medical Science, the college places substantial emphasis on research in various areas demanding special attention. The focus is on conducting research on both existing and emerging health issues that pose a threat to local communities.

The curriculum emphasizes early exposure of medical students to patient problems, fostering motivation and encouraging the development of communication skills during interactions with patients. Organ systems-based learning provides an opportunity for students to correlate their integrated understanding of basic medical sciences. This correlation between basic and clinical sciences enhances comprehension of disease mechanisms and treatments, offering an advantage over traditional didactic instructional methods.
Community exposure during the third semester involves community diagnosis, allowing students to view medicine holistically and understand various aspects of community life. Lumbini Medical College aligns its undergraduate medical education program with the core MBBS curriculum, integrating essential elements related to medical ethics, medical informatics, and elective study. This approach ensures that medical graduates are well-equipped to navigate the competitive field of medicine.
In line with global trends in medical education, the program emphasizes professional competencies, aligning with the World Health Organization’s Reorientation of Medical Education (ROME) program. The goal is to produce competent medical graduates capable of independent thinking, judgment, decision-making, and practice in fields such as Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, and Gynecology. The program is designed to anticipate and address the evolving roles of medical graduates in the healthcare landscape.
